Wendi Slaton Anderson

For our next feature, we had the pleasure of getting to know Wendi Slaton Anderson! Wendi is the dynamic, authentic, and resourceful Principal Broker for Roots Real Estate. Wendi gives us the scoop on what got her where she is today and what’s what in Austin.

Check out her Q & A for all the details…

Landlordette: We want to get to know you! Give us a brief recap of who you are, where you came from, etc.

Wendi: I grew up the baby of 6 kids in Houston, TX. I have very supportive parents who nurtured my independence, creativity, and confidence. They also taught me the value of work ethic, integrity, and kindness. I have lived in Los Angeles, Nashville, and London, and traveled extensively performing as a singer/songwriter for over a decade. I fell in love with my husband 19 years ago, and today we have 3 spirited kids who brighten our lives everyday. They also challenge and exhaust us…everyday! We moved to Austin in 2000. Austin is home!

Landlordette: What inspired you to get where you are at today?

Wendi: I am inspired by people who work towards mastering something: athletes, musicians, mechanics, chefs, artists, programmers etc. I love to see people who are passionate, dedicated, and disciplined in their chosen field. I aspire to exceed my own very high expectations everyday. Determination and a willingness to work hard are traits I value, and they are two of the characteristics that have helped me get to where I am today.

Landlordette: We know that the road to success isn’t always easy…have their been struggles? What first comes to mind as your biggest obstacle if so?

Wendi: Real Estate is viewed as a profession best suited for salesman. I am not a salesman, yet being a broker is absolutely the right job for me. I am very detail oriented, resourceful, genuinely invested in each of my clients, and a natural negotiator. I am not good at promoting myself. I do my job exceptionally well, and my clients do my marketing for me. I have a strong referral based business. In the beginning of my career that was an obstacle. Thankfully, people who trust and respect me as a person hired me to represent them in real estate transactions. I am so grateful for the people in my life who believe in me.

Landlordette: How did you overcome this struggle? What advice would you give to those in difficult situations today?

Wendi: Know your business…even after 15+ years in the real estate, I am always taking classes and looking for ways to stay relevant and sharpen my skills. Be authentic and kind. Everyone you encounter is a potential client. I have sold homes to 3 baristas because I was courteous and warm as they served me my coffee.

Landlordette: How cool is that?! If you could, would you change anything?

Wendi: I would love to see the bar raised in the real estate industry. This is my profession and I take it very seriously. I have earned the respect of my clients and colleagues but I feel consumers as a whole sometimes take for granted the service a quality Realtor provides.

Landlordette: Let’s talk real estate…What do you see for Austin in 2018?

Wendi: Based on 2018 forecasts of the top US real estate markets, Austin is number 2.  Austin has become a hub for large companies, has a flourishing tech industry, and a wealth of other job opportunities. The economy in Austin is thriving, and the real estate market is solid. While home price appreciation across most of the country has tempered, property values in Austin continue to increase at a healthy pace.

Landlordette: Any shoutouts? Any mentors? Who has played a meaningful role in getting you where you are today?

Wendi: One of my agents at Roots Real Estate, Krystal Shaw started out as my assistant 5 years ago and quickly became one of the smartest, most ethical, savvy, dedicated agents in the business. Her support has allowed me to grow my business tremendously, and I am inspired by her as a Realtor and as a woman. I would also like to recognize Julie Waidelich. She was our Realtor when we bought our first home 15+ years ago. She encouraged me to get my license and then served as my lifeline when I didn’t know what I was doing on my first few contracts. She is patient, knowledgeable, and supportive. She was my introduction into this career that I love so much, and I will always be grateful.

Landlordette: Time for some fun, if you could have an all expense paid vacation anywhere in the world where would it be and why?

Wendi: Cuba.  My impression of this country is that it is vibrant and alive with music, dancing, eating, and laughter. I love all 4 of those things!

We had a great time talking with Wendi and hope that you’ve been inspired to keep at it, and keep smiling, no matter where you are.
